​Hi! My name is Anupama Bhattacharya. I am the mother of Jhulan Sarada Purnima and a multidisciplinary educator, curriculum designer, artist, and technologist with more than a decade of experience guiding learners from infancy through adulthood.

Throughout my teaching life, I have explored art, robotics, science, mathematics, engineering, dance, poetry, painting, algorithms, swimming, meditation, and more. Across these kaleidoscoping disciplines, I have learned that the most vibrant education emerges from everlasting curiosity, a joyful heart, and the freedom to encounter knowledge through many different pathways.

After the arrival of my most immersive and demanding student—my lovely daughter, Jhulan—I became enchanted by the exuberance of early childhood. I founded Sarada Sun to create learning experiences that welcome children’s abundant energy, imagination, movement, and emotion into the classroom. Through courses such as Dance Around the World, Musical Math, Storytelling with Mudras, and CODE à la MODE, children discover that movement can illuminate mathematics, dance can become geography, stories can live in the body, and technical ideas can become playful forms of self-expression.

Before founding Sarada Sun, I taught and designed interdisciplinary STEAM experiences through BadgerBots Robotics, including Circuit Jewelry, Dancing Robots, Paper Airplane Aerodynamics, Planetary Dance, and Musical Fruit. I have also taught computer science and algorithms through an online coding bootcamp, supported young autistic learners, instructed swimming across eleven developmental levels, facilitated meditation and grounding practices, and created art and movement experiences in libraries, museums, farms, schools, studios, and community spaces. I currently serve as an artist-in-residence with Hawthorne Library, where I facilitate creative-reuse projects both inside the library and through neighborhood partnerships.

 

My educational practice is supported by a Bachelor of Science with a double major in Biomedical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. I have co-authored research using machine learning to explore language and am a named co-inventor on a published U.S. patent application for wearable biofeedback technology.

My creative life is every bit as colorful. I am a choreographer, dancer, poet, painter, and community artist who loves bringing different forms of expression into conversation. I created and taught an original work to more than sixty dancers through DELVE and have developed interdisciplinary performances through the Dance Experience Lab at Isthmus Dance Collective. My movement practice began with a lifelong foundation in Bharatanatyam and has continued to expand through dance traditions from around the world. My poetry has been published in a UW–Madison humanities journal, and I have had the honor of performing my work through multiple arts and community organizations. Beyond the stage, I have hosted community art exhibitions and shared my paintings in spaces throughout Madison, including the Chazen Museum of Art.

I believe that analytical rigor and emotional expression do not stand on opposite sides of learning. When disciplines, cultures, and ways of knowing are invited into conversation, each expands what the others can become. My greatest joy as an educator is creating the conditions for that moment of illumination—when a new idea lights up in a learner’s mind, body, and beautifully unique way of seeing the world.
